Keeping Pollen and Dust Mites to a Minimum

When springtime descends upon us, it is impossible to avoid pollen.  But there are ways to minimize your exposure to pollen and other allergens at home.

  • Before entering the home for the last time, change your clothes in the garage or other separate area from your living space.

  • Take a shower in the evenings.  This will wash away the pollen that has accumulated in your hair and on your skin.

  • As wonderful as a spring breeze feels blowing through your home, you should keep your windows closed at all times.  That amazing breeze will carry pollen to every corner of your home.

  • Avoid driving with your car windows down.

  • Purchase hypoallergenic pillow cases and mattress pads.

  • Wash your sheets every few days during the heavy pollen season.

  • Keep closets and other storage areas clean, with items stored apart.  Clutter will enable mold growth and dust accumulation.

  • Carpeting, pillows and heavy curtains accumulate dust.  Consider installing a hard wood or other type of floor and remove unnecessary pillows and curtains.

  • Toys and other household objects that cannot be washed can be placed in the freezer overnight.  This will kill dust mites.

  • Do not hang your laundry out to dry.  Pollen will accumulate on your clothes.  Additionally, the dryer will kill dust mites.

If you are allergic to pollen, you may be susceptible to apple, pear and hazelnut allergies.  Cross reactions are possible between environmental allergies and food allergies.
